Developmental Editing Writing

Job Presentation

I am working on a thought-provoking non-fiction book that explores the potential societal impacts of advanced artificial intelligence (AI) and the concentration of AI capabilities in the hands of a few powerful entities.

The book argues for implementing an "AI tax" to mitigate these risks.

The book is currently in the drafting stage, with several chapters and the overall narrative structure taking shape. I need help, restructuring content, fact-checking, cutting or expanding sections.

I require assistance with developmental editing to refine the narrative flow, strengthen the arguments for an AI tax, and ensure the book's message comes across compellingly.

Style and Tone you will be contributing to

  • Ominous and Foreboding Tone: The passages adopt an ominous, cautionary tone that paints a bleak, dystopian vision of how advanced AI could potentially enslave humanity if left unchecked. Words and phrases like "abyss," "whisper of chains," "instruments of domination," and "existential threat" create an overarching sense of dread and impending peril.
  • Vivid Imagery and Metaphors: To emphasize the grave implications, the passages use vivid metaphorical language and analogies. For example, they compare an AI intelligence explosion to humanity birthing a “post-human intelligence" that could view us as mere "impediments to progress." Such evocative visuals and allegories powerfully illustrate the risks in visceral terms.
  • Formal and Academic Style: The passages maintain a formal, academic tone and writing style suitable for a scholarly work or researched position paper. The diction employs an intelligent, erudite vocabulary like "insidious," "catalyse," "congeal," "ontological" etc. Sentence structures are complex, with heavy use of subordinate clauses.
  • Descriptive and Foresight-Oriented: There is a strong descriptive element, painting detailed scenario analyses of how various AI risk vectors could plausibly coalesce into catastrophic outcomes like authoritarian dystopias or loss of human agency. The speculative foresight aims to render the hypothetical perils to drive home their urgency vividly.
  • Integration of Counterpoints: While adopting an overtly critical perspective toward unfettered AI development, the passages deftly integrate and rebut common counterarguments about AI being a neutral tool, the feasibility of value alignment research, or faith in retaining human control. This builds credibility while reinforcing the cautionary stance.
  • Dense Conceptual Exploration: The writing style goes into nuanced depth exploring complex, interwoven concepts like value alignment difficulties, risks of unconstrained optimization metrics, the animating principles behind different dystopian models like Orwell vs Huxley, and breaking down various threat vectors like workforce automation or surveillance panopticons.
